You must have previously worked and now fulfil some conditions to get the unemployment benefits. You are not eligible for benefits if you have not worked at all. To be eligible for benefits, you must fulfil the basic conditions and the work requirements.
You can either receive basic benefits or income based benefits. The type of benefit you are entitled to depends mainly upon whether you subscribe to an unemployment insurance fund (a-kassa) or not.
Period of benefit
A period of benefit is 300 days. If you by the 300th day have a child who has not yet reached 18 years of age, you will be granted an additional 150 days.
You can receive benefits for a maximum of 5 days per week. You will receive this if you are unemployed full-time. If you spend time participating in one of the Public Employment Service’s programs and receive an activity grant from Försäkringskassan then these days will also be counted as compensatory days.
You will receive no benefit for the first days of unemployment; these are so-called qualifying days (karensdagar). This applies to each new period of benefit you begin. These qualifying days are included as part of the 300 days of the benefit period. Due to temporary rules, the qualifying days may vary.
